General Notes Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club

The club was originally started in the year 1961 as the Upper Hutt Workingman’s Club. In 1964 when the Club received its charter it had a total of 170 members. In 1969, it changed its name to its current name of cosmopolitan club. The membership of the club steadily increased and it had a total membership of 4000 in the year August 2003. In 2003, the club was tragically destroyed by a fire and it was rebuilt and reopened in the year of 2005.

When it reopened in the year 2005, it was also merged with the Upper Hutt Returned and Services Association (RSA), which is an associate of the club. It is also associated with other RSAs of New Zealand. It works for the welfare of returned servicemen who have served in war zone or peacekeeping duties.

It also has the Upper Hutt RSA Poppy Trust which looks after the welfare of the members.Volunteers visit the homes of the servicemen in the area. Important days celebrating the contribution of the armed forces like Poppy day, Anzac Day, and Armistice day are also celebrated by the RSA with functions and church service.

Membership of the Club

Any person who is interested can become a member of the club by filling the application form which is available at the website or collect it from the club. Every person will usually require someone to nominate them, and someone to second them. But it is easy to find someone to do this if you are new in town.

If a wannabe member does not know anyone who will nominate them, they can contact the office, who will make the necessary arrangements. The one time joining fee for the club is $20, and the annual fee is $36. Members of the club who have completed three years of membership have to pay a reduced annual fee of $12. Members can renew their membership online so it’s just too easy.

Each application is reviewed by the Executive Committee of the club which meets once a month.After the application is approved, the member is asked to pay the annual fee which is due till the birthday, at the rate of $3 per month. The member is also given a membership card, which makes him eligible for the various club facilities.

NB: The club subscription or membership fee becomes due on the birthday of the member. A meeting is held for all new members joining the club in the last month on the first Wednesday of each month, when they are informed about the various facilities available and the rules.

Hire the Venue for a Function

The function area can be hired for meeting, conferences, Christmas, wedding parties, birthday parties, workshops and other functions. It has special packages for weddings and Christmas parties including menu and other arrangements. These functions can be held in the Garden bar or upstairs bar. For functions, the total capacity of the rooms is approximately 300 so you have heaps of space for a big party or event.

Book a Holiday Retreat

One of the facilities available to members of the club is that they can book the Otaki holiday home owned by the club at super rates. The holiday home is located on the beach front, and members can enjoy the warm climate and the various water sports activities like swimming, fishing, sailing, rafting and kayaking in the area.

Otaki is also very popular for its fruits and vegetables, local crafts in the market shops. The club charges each member $30 per adult per night, $10 per child of school age per night. A $40 non refundable deposit is required for booking a room, along with $60 bond. Members can book the holiday home for a maximum of seven days at a time.
